Prince Harry carried out four unannounced engagements across Washington, DC on Wednesday, August 19, visiting military hospitals and paying tribute to fallen American service members.

The Duke of Sussex’s schedule took him to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Arlington National Cemetery, a roundtable organised by The Independence Fund, and the Washington VA Medical Center.

His day unfolded as it was revealed that Harry and Meghan Markle are moving their family back to Britain for an extended period.

Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, have been enrolled in British schools ahead of the September term.

No meeting with Donald Trump took place during Harry’s time in the capital. The engagements were conducted with minimal advance notice and largely away from media attention.

At Walter Reed, widely considered the foremost military hospital in the United States, Harry spent time with recovering service members and medical staff.

He led a focused roundtable with wounded veterans and examined advances in rehabilitation technology.

The visit included a detailed look at how the facility applies sports-medicine techniques to treat personnel living with limb loss, polytrauma and other catastrophic injuries, intending to return them to active duty or improve their functional independence.

That approach has a direct connection to Harry’s own charitable work. The duke, who completed two tours of Afghanistan during his decade in the British Army, established the Invictus Games in 2014 as an international adaptive sports competition for wounded, injured and sick military personnel.

From Walter Reed, Harry travelled to Arlington National Cemetery, where he observed the changing of the guard and placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a monument dating to 1921 that honours unidentified Americans killed in war.

He then sat down with four Gold Star families, heard about the service of their lost relatives and visited their graves.

Among those he met was the wife of Army Sergeant Michael Verardo, who sustained devastating injuries after surviving two IED blasts in Afghanistan in 2010.

Sergeant Verardo went on to become a prominent campaigner for wounded veterans, caregivers and military families before dying in August 2025 from complications related to his injuries.

Harry’s Arlington visit came roughly four months after King Charles and Queen Camilla laid their own wreath at the same site during their American tour in late April.

The Sussexes’ return to Britain was first reported on August 19, though the announcement is not expected to be made officially until August 29.

King Charles was informed of the couple’s plans on Sunday, August 16, and is understood to welcome the prospect of spending more private time with his son’s family.

However, the King has made clear that Harry and Meghan’s status as non-working royals will not change, in line with the arrangement reached with the late Queen Elizabeth II when they stepped back from official duties in 2020.

Meghan is expected to continue running her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from the UK.

The couple are retaining their properties in California and Portugal.

There are no plans for either Harry or Meghan to take on working royal roles again; they will remain financially independent private individuals.
