Princess Anne and Prince Edward made a rare joint appearance at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow today, taking in the athletics and para athletics programme on day seven of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s wife Sophie joined the siblings in the stands on July 30, with all three cheering on Team England from the same row – though Anne was seated a few places along from her brother and sister-in-law.

The Princess Royal opted for a practical ensemble of trench coat, blue denim jeans and her signature sporty Adidas wraparound sunglasses.

Edward, serving in his capacity as vice-patron of Commonwealth Sport, appeared wholly absorbed by the action on the track, as Sophie was photographed leaning towards Anne during the afternoon’s events.

It is uncommon to see King Charles’s two youngest siblings working side by side, as their packed diaries rarely align.

The pair do, of course, come together with the wider royal family for the calendar’s marquee occasions, from Trooping the Colour to the Christmas Day gathering at Sandringham. Between those fixtures, however, their professional paths rarely cross.

They often meet again during the summer retreat at Balmoral, along with the King and Queen, and the Wales family – though this is not a public engagement.

The Commonwealth Games represents a perfect opportunity, sitting at the crossroads of Anne’s deep sporting interests and Edward’s longstanding commitment to the Commonwealth movement.

Anne’s charitable and organisational commitments number more than 300, spanning sport and the military in particular.

She is a regular presence at rugby union fixtures and maintains longstanding patronages in horse racing and sailing, often completing multiple engagements in a single day.

Edward’s portfolio takes a rather different shape, centring on youth development and the arts.

He does, however, hold significant sporting connections – notably his patronage of the British Paralympic Association, a role he has occupied since 2003.

His ties to the Commonwealth Games run deeper still. As vice-patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation, he has been present at every edition of the competition since Edinburgh played host in 1986 – a remarkable four-decade streak that only highlights his dedication to the movement.

This summer has, in fact, brought several opportunities for the siblings to share the spotlight.

Just last month, on June 30, they were together in Edinburgh for a garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where they were joined by the King and Queen. Anne chose a patterned red dress paired with a wide-brimmed hat for that occasion, while Edward cut a smart figure in a suit and top hat.

A fortnight before that, the pair reunited at Royal Ascot on June 18, watching the racing from the Royal Box on day three of the meeting.

They were spotted in conversation alongside Sophie and Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, who complemented her mother’s look with a striking hat of her own.
