Fuel prices in the UK have hit yet another grim milestone, as petrol and diesel drivers heading to the forecourts will have to pay some of the highest prices not seen for four years.

New data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that costs hit new highs since the outbreak of the Iran war earlier today (Monday, September 14).

Motorists are paying an average price of 169.68p per litre for unleaded petrol, while diesel costs 191.68p, meaning drivers with an average 55-litre fuel tank will be paying £93 and £105 respectively.

These prices are higher than Sunday’s petrol high of 169.52p and the diesel high of 191.54p set on 15 April, as the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate, sending oil prices ever higher.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said fuel prices are now at levels not seen since early August 2022, just a few months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Since the start of September alone, fuel prices have risen by 8p a litre as the United States and Iran trade missile attacks and continue to escalate tensions.

Mr Williams added: “With oil well over $100 (£74.20) a barrel, there’s no end in sight to high pump prices and the pain it brings to drivers who depend on their vehicles.

“In fact, the average price of diesel may be on the way to overtaking the record high of 199.05p set on June 25, 2022. Petrol, however, is still a long way from its all-time record of 191.53p on July 3, 2022.”

Such expensive fuel prices have not been seen since August 2022
