An 80-year-old flying instructor who died in a light aircraft crash near Loch Lomond alongside a 16-year-old boy has been named locally as Ian Haggis.

Mr Haggis was killed when the Piper Tomahawk II came down north-east of Drymen late on Friday afternoon.

Friends and fellow aviation enthusiasts paid tribute to the experienced pilot on social media. One wrote: “My good friend and instructor Ian Haggis was killed yesterday in an air accident my heart goes to his family.”

Another said: “Heart breaking. What a legend. Only God knows what happened.”

Mr Haggis was also remembered as a “gentleman and a very experienced aviator”.

The aircraft departed Glasgow Airport shortly after 4.15pm on Friday, with its transmissions ceasing around 20 minutes into the flight.

Police cordoned off a gate on Old Drymen Road on Saturday as inquiries into the crash continued.

Temporary airspace restrictions have also been introduced following the incident, including a ban on drone activity.

Gavin Birch-Williams, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said the airport was aware of the crash involving an aircraft which had departed from its site.

He added: “This is a deeply tragic event, and the thoughts and heartfelt sympathies from all at Glasgow Airport are with the friends and families affected.”

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed an investigation was under way.

In a statement, it said: “An investigation has begun into an accident involving a light aircraft which occurred on October 16 2026.

“A team has travelled to the accident site near Drymen, north of Glasgow, to make inquiries and gather evidence as part of the process of conducting a safety investigation.”
