National Lottery data has revealed the luckiest place in Britain to become a millionaire.

The figures, adjusted for population size, placed the North Lanarkshire town of Motherwell at the very top of the rankings.

The data stretches back to 1994, when the lottery first launched.

In raw numbers, Birmingham holds the crown with 234 millionaires created over that period.

Belfast sits in second position on 202, whilst Glasgow rounds out the top three with 178.

However, larger postcode areas inevitably generate more winners owing to their greater populations.

A fairer picture emerges when the total number of winners is measured against the estimated adult population of each area.

By that metric, Motherwell comes out on top with one millionaire for every 4,156 adults.

That equates to roughly 2.41 millionaires per 10,000 grown-ups.

The statistics encompass both those who chose to publicise their wins and those who preferred anonymity.

They are based on postcode areas rather than precise postcodes or local authority boundaries.

Watford ranks second in the population-adjusted table, followed by Liverpool in third.

Dumfries takes fourth spot, with Romford and Durham sharing fifth and sixth places respectively.

Llandrindod Wells in mid-Wales occupies seventh position.

St Albans, Sunderland and Hull complete the top ten.

The findings demonstrate fortune favours locations right across the country, from Scottish towns to English cities and Welsh market towns.

Lottery operator Allwyn also disclosed 140 players have already become millionaires during 2026.

That remarkable pace works out at one new millionaire roughly every 48 hours.

Kathy Garrett, Winners Experience Lead at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, said: “One of the things we love most about The National Lottery is seeing luck turn up in every corner of the UK.”

She added: “From big cities to small towns, we’ve celebrated thousands of life-changing wins over the years, and these figures show that there is no single postcode for luck.”
