A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and murder, and remains in custody for questioning.
He had already been arrested in relation to five aggravated burglaries between January and October when detectives linked him to the murder case.
The victims in the burglaries had all been targeted similarly, with the suspect attempting to or gaining entry to their properties before demanding they hand over their bank cards and pin codes, the force said.
Det Supt Amber Waywell said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the gentleman who has sadly died, and with his family and loved ones at what will be an incredibly difficult and distressing time.
“This remains a complex and developing investigation, and we are working hard to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.”
She added the force took “offences like these incredibly seriously” and would “not tolerate those who seek to prey on vulnerable members of our communities”.
Greater Manchester Police encouraged any potential victims of a similar crime which could be linked to get in touch.
