A pub in Somerset has been officially confirmed as England’s oldest, ending a long-running dispute over which establishment rightfully holds the title.

Historic England has declared The George Inn in Norton St Philip the country’s oldest continually licensed drinking establishment, with tree-ring dating analysis providing crucial proof.

The inn has welcomed patrons for more than six centuries, according to experts from the heritage body.

Building archaeologist Dr James Wright, who carried out the investigation, said documentary and physical evidence sets The George Inn apart from the many other pubs across the nation that have claimed the title, most of which rely on unverifiable folklore rather than hard facts.

Dr Wright explained that his approach combined three strands of investigation: scrutinising the building’s physical fabric, tracing the history of its builders, and applying dendrochronology, the science of dating timber by its tree rings.

He said: “Most of what you’ve heard about the oldest pubs in England are myths.

“There are many, many claims to be the oldest pub in the country, and yet so few of them actually have evidence to back up those claims.”

He noted that more than two dozen pubs across the country profess to be the oldest, with some asserting origins stretching back a millennium.

The inn’s origins trace back to the late 14th century, when the Carthusian monks of nearby Hinton Priory commissioned its construction as a shrewd commercial venture.

It was designed to house merchants visiting the monastery’s markets and fairs, with charges levied for overnight stays, goods storage, and sales tolls, all of which generated revenue for the religious house.

The establishment also served a vital function in the area’s thriving wool trade.

Tree-ring analysis of the building’s timbers provided the definitive piece of evidence.

Dr Wright explained: “Because we know medieval carpenters didn’t muck around at all and they would fell the timber when it was green and build almost immediately afterwards, the actual date of felling gives us the near date of construction.”

Dr Wright’s research has dismantled several well-known contenders.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, which once held the Guinness World Record, purports to date from AD793, yet the building itself is from around 1400 and was originally a monastic dovecote, with no confirmed use as a pub before the early 19th century.

The Bingley Arms in Leeds claims roots in 953AD but is almost certainly a late medieval structure, whilst Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham, which advertises an 1189 founding date, was actually erected in 1680 according to documentary evidence.

The debate grew so contentious that Guinness World Records abandoned the category entirely in 2000.

Dr Wright told the Guardian that no pubs appear in the Domesday Book, meaning any establishment claiming inclusion in the famous document “is having you on.”

He suggested such assertions likely stem from “canny marketing strategies by landlords, tenants, breweries and pub companies.”

The George Inn boasts a colourful past beyond its record-breaking age.

The diarist Samuel Pepys stayed there with his wife and servants in 1668 on his way to Bath, and it served as a headquarters during the 1685 Monmouth Rebellion.

More recently, it has appeared in films including The Remains of the Day and Tom Jones.

The pub remains a thriving business, having won the AA Inn of the Year award in both 2024 and 2025.
