The wife of Andy Burnham’s National Security Adviser has been accused of supporting Palestine Action.

In a post on social media, Sarah Helm, wife of Jonathan Powell, appeared to back the proscribed terrorist group.

The journalist and author responded to a post on X, showing a clip of broadcaster Adam Boulton criticising fellow author Sally Rooney.

A Met Police spokesman said: “We have been made aware of an X post on Thursday, 15 October referencing Palestine Action. It is in the process of being assessed to determine whether any further police investigation may be required.”

Ms Rooney has recently had her books withdrawn from the UK market over her support for Palestine Action.

She had previously declared she would use proceeds from her sales to support the group following its proscription in 2025.

In a statement, her publisher Faber said: “Current legislation in the UK has led to circumstances where Faber cannot pass on UK earnings to Sally Rooney for her work.

“To sell a writer’s work and not be able to pass on earnings is an unconscionable situation for a publisher. As such, and in full agreement with Sally, we have taken the decision that we can no longer supply her works in the UK in any format.

“We remain the proud publisher of her remarkable body of work, which we will continue to sell in other territories.”

In the clip shared by Ms Helm, Mr Boutlon said: “She [Sally Rooney], in common with a lot of people in Ireland is taking a very strong pro-Palestine, and I have to say anti-Israel and anti-Jewish stance.”

Reposting the clip to her own X feed, Ms Helm added a post which read: “God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action.

“Sounds like Adam would have all our books swept off the shelves in a jiffy.”

Palestine Action was officially proscribed as a terrorist organisation under former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s Government in July 2025.

MPs in the House of Commons voted 385 to 26 in favour of proscribing the group under the Terrorism Act 2000.

The ban formally came into effect on July 5 2025, making it illegal to be a member of or express support for Palestine Action.

At the time of the ban, the then Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Palestine Action “passed the threshold” based on “clear national security evidence and assessments”.

She said: “The right to protest and the right to free speech are the cornerstone of our democracy and there are countless campaign groups that freely exercise those rights. Violence and serious criminal damage has no place in legitimate protests.”

The Supreme Court has granted permission to Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori to appeal against the proscription of the group, scheduled to be heard by the UK Supreme Court between October 1 and December 21.

A No10 spokesman said: “These views are held by an individual who does not represent the Government in any capacity.”

GB News has contacted representatives for Ms Helm for comment.
