Drivers have been warned of the dangers surrounding headlight glare this winter, which could impact millions of motorists across the UK.

With harsher weather bringing tougher visibility, experts have urged drivers to ensure they maintain clear sight of the road at all times.

Google search volumes for “tips for driving in winter weather” surged 129 per cent in the lead up to the Christmas period.

Experts have warned that many drivers may struggle to judge distances, spot hazards, and react swiftly on the road.

There has been a recent increase in blinding glare from headlights, alongside adverse weather conditions like fog, making it more difficult for drivers.

Kerry Fawcett, from Radius, said: “Headlights seem so much brighter these days, mainly because cars have shifted to modern LED and even laser lighting.

“These systems produce a much sharper, whiter beam, which does improve visibility for drivers but can also be far more dazzling for anyone approaching from the opposite direction.”

While the technology brings clear benefits, she warned that headlights have become more intense, “creating new challenges for people driving larger vehicles”.

Most notably, SUV, HGV and van drivers, who sit higher than traditional car drivers, were found to be the most impacted by headlight glare.

Ms Fawcett explained that drivers of these larger vehicles can be impacted by headlight glare more directly and for longer.

“Over the course of a long shift or journey can lead to increased eye strain, slower reaction times and greater fatigue, especially at night,” she stated.

According to a recent RAC study, the problem of dazzling headlights is getting worse, with roughly six in 10 drivers reporting the glare has worsened in the past 12 months.

RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said: “It’s undisputable, public concern is increasing, but the reasons for glare and what can be done to reduce it aren’t nearly as clear.

“That’s why we’re pleased the Government heeded the calls of the RAC and our partner organisations on this issue and commissioned an independent project to look into it.”

Google searches for “yellow glasses for night driving” were reportedly up 810 per cent this quarter, with more than 7,000 searches in the past month alone.

To help drivers avoid being blasted by oncoming headlights, Ms Fawcett said anti-glare driving glasses are becoming the “unexpected hero of winter”.

“The glasses are a great help for night drivers, especially for those with astigmatism,” Ms Fawcett shared.

One social media video showing the benefits of the glasses has already obtained more than 1.5 million views and 156,000 likes.

One comment stated: “Omg, where did you get these?! I need a pair immediately! Driving this time of year feels like I’m entering the gates of heaven.”

Experts call on drivers to take regular breaks during journeys to help reduce fatigue while behind the wheel.

Drivers should also ensure the driver’s position is set up correctly with the vehicle warm but well-ventilated.
