A motorcycle rider being pursued by police on a motorway has been killed after he fled his bike and was hit by another vehicle.
Officers spotted a red motorcycle being driven in a dangerous manner on the M60 clockwise around Stockport Pyramid shortly before 19:30 BST on Saturday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.
The force said it was brought to a stop on the M56 but the man ran off across the motorway and was hit and killed by another vehicle.
GMP said, in line with procedures following a fatality after police contact, it has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The motorcycle had been posing a significant risk to members of the public using the motorway, the force said.
“Tactical contact” was made with the bike at low speed on the hard shoulder by junction 5 near Manchester Airport and it was brought to a stop between junctions 3 and 4 of the M56 near Wythenshawe, it said.
The rider was given emergency medical treatment by an ambulance crew but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second man, who was not involved in the initial pursuit, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs and causing death by driving uninsured.
The incident resulted in the closure of part of the M56 overnight.
GMP has referred the matter to the IOPC which has decided an independent investigation is required.
The force is appealing for anyone with information, dashcam footage or CCTV footage of the incident to contact the force.
