Meghan Markle has been labelled “Salmonella Sussex” after social media users accused the Duchess of Sussex of making a hygiene mistake in a recent social media post.

The 44-year-old shared a short clip on Instagram where she was preparing a turkey ahead of Thanksgiving.

In the clip, the duchess is seen mixing a variety of seasonings into a bowl and rubbing the mixture onto the raw bird to get it ready for cooking.

Users on social media noticed that she was seen with her jewellery still on while she was handling the turkey, while she did was her hands after rubbing the seasoning in, the jewellery remained on.

Fans were left outraged after the duchess touched turkey with her jewellery on.

“I don’t know anyone who wears their rings and bracelets when handling food, especially a turkey. Guaranteed spread of bacteria,” one horrified user commented.

A second commented: “I mean I love sparkly engagement rings as much as the next jewellery-hound, but not while cooking!”

A third said: “Right? Who wants c**p getting stuck in your ring’s setting?”

“So gross, and it’s basic food handling knowledge. Proof she has no idea what she’s doing,” declared another user.

“People just don’t realise that rings can and will harbour germs and by not taking your rings off you are asking for trouble,” another viewer revealed.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, raw turkey and its juice can contaminate anything it touches.

Their guidance states: “Be sure to handle your turkey correctly to prevent harmful germs from spreading to other food or your family and friends.”

Another user commented: “Jewellery, bracelet and rings while touching raw meat?”

A user shared their own experience saying: “Then she picks up the pepper grinder without washing her hands. Another Salmonella Sussex disaster.

“My mom learned that lesson. She had to have her wedding and anniversary rings cut off her fingers because of the infection.

“The doctors told her all it takes is one small scratch. I always take off my rings and any other jewelry I am wearing on my hands when I’m in the kitchen.”

The duchess announced a new collaboration with her with Soho House on Wednesday, in what she labelled a “full-circle moment.”
