A massive fire has broken out at a British Army barracks in North Yorkshire.

Crews from across the county are being supported by firefighters from County Durham and the Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

The blaze is understood to be at the Gaza barracks, off Hipswell Road at Catterick Garrison.

Some have reported seeing plumes of smoke from over two miles away.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has said its response to the incident is expected to continue throughout the night.

A spokesman for the force said: “North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have multiple appliances in attendance an accommodation block fire.

“An appliance from County Durham and Darlington, along with their aerial ladder platform, are also in attendance.

“This incident is expected to be ongoing throughout the night.”

Residents from nearby Richmond have reported being able to see the blaze from town.

Video of the fire appears to show it ripping through the second floor of the accommodation.

Black plumes of smoke can be seen rising from a window, the videos posted online show.

Local councillor Kevin Foster said he was now monitoring the situation.

He said: “At this stage, details are limited, and I am awaiting further information.

“My immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the camp, including our military personnel, their families and the emergency services responding to the incident.

“I would like to thank our emergency services for their response and hope that everyone involved is safe.

“As North Yorkshire Council’s Armed Forces Champion, I will continue to monitor the situation and offer any support I can to our Armed Forces community.

“My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I hope to hear positive news as further details emerge.”

Further details around the fire, including the cause, were still yet to be confirmed as of late on Wednesday evening.
