A young man is battling for survival after being shot on Christmas Day in Sheffield, leaving him in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The 20-year-old victim sustained a gunshot wound to his chest on Wilfred Drive in the Darnall neighbourhood shortly before 11.30pm on Thursday evening.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported him to hospital, where he remained in a critical state on Boxing Day, according to South Yorkshire Police.

The shooting has prompted a swift police response, with detectives working rapidly to establish the circumstances surrounding what officers have described as an “abhorrent incident.”

Four suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

The men, aged 20, 22, 28 and 29, were apprehended on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in police custody.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that investigators moved quickly following the incident.

A spokesman stated: “Following the incident, detectives immediately began working at pace to understand the circumstances and quickly had four men arrested in connection to the incident.”

On Friday afternoon, a police cordon remained in place along Wilfred Drive and a 100-metre section of Wilfrid Road, with officers stationed at both ends of the scene near Staniforth Road.

Chief Inspector Andy Knowles condemned the violence in stark terms.

“This is an abhorrent incident that has left a man fighting for his life,” he said.

The senior officer emphasised the dangers posed by firearms offences.

“Gun crime poses a great threat to the safety and wellbeing of our community, putting innocent people at risk of being caught up in an offender’s actions,” he added.

He made clear that such violence would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Chief Inspector Knowles continued: “We are committed to taking firm, decisive action against anyone who chooses to engage in violence or carry illegal firearms, but we are stronger with your help – our community’s support.”

A resident living close to the scene expressed disbelief at the violence, telling reporters: “It’s such a shock.

“Nobody deserves this to happen to them, whatever he has got himself mixed-up in.”

The local man described the area as typically peaceful, adding: “This is a safe place.

“You can go about your business, no problem.
