The M20 will be shut overnight after a huge collision involving more than 30 cars, Kent Police has said.
Officers were called to the scene around 6.40pm on Saturday on the London-bound carriageway of the M20, the force said.
Members of Kent Police are now attending the scene, alongside other emergency services.
Two people have sustained serious injuries.
One was rushed to a London hospital, while the other was taken to a local hospital, the force said.
Several other drivers sustained non-serious injuries.
Kent Fire and Rescue confirmed that 11 people were cared for by paramedics.
Road closures are now in place on both the London-bound and coast-bound carriageways between junction nine at Ashford and eight at Leeds Castle.
These are likely to remain overnight, police said.
Motorists are now urged to avoid the area.
Anyone with information about the incident or who has dash cam footage is asked to contact Kent Police via its live chat function, or by calling 101, and quoting reference 07-1245.
One user on social media said they had been stuck in the jam for at least three and a half hours.
Another reported that heavy fog had plagued Kent’s roads.
The M20 is one of the most heavily disrupted roads in Britain.
