A lorry driver has been killed after his vehicle crashed into a river during the aftermath of Storm Chandra, police have said.

Emergency services rushed scene in New Forest, Hampshire shortly after 1pm on Tuesday.

Hampshire Constabulary said a man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the crash site in North Gorley.

The force said inquiries were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident occurred in an area that has been hit by severe weather and left many motorists stranded.

A force spokesman said: “We were called just after 1pm on Tuesday to a report that a lorry had gone into a river off Ringwood Road in North Gorley.

“Sadly the driver, a man in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.”

Residents at a home park in Dorset have been told to evacuate their properties “as quickly as possible” with a severe flood warning in place due to Storm Chandra.

Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts are in place on Wednesday, with the Met Office saying further rain could bring more disruption.

Weather journalist Nathan Rao told GB News the UK is “woefully unprepared” for the heavy flooding that Storm Chandra was expected to bring.

“What we’re seeing with these storms as they come through is that the greatest threat is the heavy rain,” Mr Rao explained.

“And now the flooding and the effects of Storm Chandra through the next few days are going to be the clean-up from flooding, as we’re seeing across the south-west of the country, across Somerset.

“In fact, a major incident has been declared in Somerset, reminiscent of the 2013 winter floods, which again put the West Country under water.

“But it is going to be flooding not just from Storm Chandra.

“As we go through this week, later in the week and through into the middle of February, with more rain on the way, there is going to be an issue as these storms from the Atlantic come in.

“So although Storm Chandra has pretty much done its thing, there is more to come and it’s going to take a while for these floods to recede.”

National Rail have warned that disruption is expected until Friday, with trains cancelled across Devon, including to Exeter St Davids. Speed restrictions are also in place across Scotland.

Several schools remain closed in both Somerset and Devon on Wednesday, while yellow weather warnings for rain are also in place for South West England on Thursday and Friday.
