Voters in Gloucestershire have told GB News they support Labour’s latest U-turn on postponing local elections after No10 dropped the controversial plans on Tuesday.

Previously, ministers have claimed the delays were necessary to accommodate local government reorganisation, insisting the elections would have been too expensive for authorities which would ultimately be abolished.

But a legal challenge by Reform UK has led to the Government dropping its plans to delay the local contests.

Residents in Cheltenham – whose council is run by Liberal Democrats – were just a handful of the 4.6 million Britons whose votes would have been postponed under Labour’s intitial plans.

Enthralled at the backtrack, one resident told GB News: “I think it’s a great idea and it shouldn’t have gone in the way that it did in the first place. We’re all entitled to vote. You shouldn’t be able to stop people voting when it’s due.”

Meanwhile, another commented: “It does sound a bit of a confusion, doesn’t it?

“It sounds like they’re not really sure whether they can or whether they can’t. Now they’ve changed their minds again. So who knows? Who knows what they’re trying to do?”

And a third told the People’s Channel: “I think they should never have been not on. So yeah, I think this should be back on. I know it’s costly, but it’s, you know, you need to have the election.”
