Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland will close 71 branches next year as the shift toward online banking continues.

All three brands are part of Lloyds Banking Group, which first announced the closures earlier this year.

The list includes 40 Lloyds branches, 14 Halifax sites and 17 Bank of Scotland locations.

Customers affected have a few alternatives. Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland account holders can use any branch across the three banks for everyday services.

It’s also worth checking whether a local banking hub is available – these shared high street sites allow customers to carry out basic banking in areas where traditional branches have shut.

A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group previously said: “The way people are banking has changed, with over 21 million customers choosing apps to manage their money.

“We’re providing more choice than ever before, bringing together the best in digital convenience with our people.

“Alongside our app, our customers can use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, the Post Office or banking hubs for their everyday banking, and deposit cash at over 30,000 PayPoint locations.”

In response to the new branch closures, cash access network Link has recommended 11 new banking hubs to protect access to face-to-face services in affected towns.

The proposal comes against the backdrop of a long-running decline in high street banking. Since January 2015, banks and building societies have shut 6,626 branches – around 53 every month – removing 67 per cent of the network that existed at the start of 2015.

The figures cover 20 major current account providers.

NatWest Group has closed the most sites, shutting 1,529 branches across NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank. Lloyds Banking Group – Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland – has shut 1,463 branches. Barclays is the biggest individual reducer, with 1,236 closures.

Following pressure from campaigners and government, the UK’s major high street banks

Following pressure from campaigners and government, the UK’s major high street banks – Bank of Ireland, Barclays, Danske Bank, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide, NatWest Group, Santander, TSB and Virgin Money – have agreed to fund banking hubs on a voluntary basis.

Since January 2022, banks have been required to notify Link ahead of branch closures so it can assess whether a community needs replacement services such as a hub. Communities can also request an assessment directly.

As of August 19, 2025, 178 banking hubs are open across the UK. Many more are planned, but some areas could face a long wait — and others may end up without in-person banking at all.

Cash Access UK keeps an up-to-date regional list of banking hubs, showing those already operating and those still under construction.
