Lara Stone, the Dutch supermodel, has disclosed that she is battling breast cancer at the age of 42.
The former face of Calvin Klein took to Instagram on Saturday to share the diagnosis, describing it as “a huge shock” while expressing relief that the disease had been caught in its early stages.
“Since it’s still officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share that I have recently been diagnosed and am undergoing treatment for breast cancer,” she wrote.
Ms Stone, who rarely opens up about her private life on social media, added: “This has obviously been a huge shock, and I’m so grateful to have found it early.”
The mother of two said she hoped her openness might encourage others to seek medical attention without delay.
“I don’t often share my personal life online, but if this post will make just 1 person check their breasts, or make that appointment they’ve been putting off, it’s worth sharing,” she wrote, alongside a poster encouraging women to examine themselves regularly. (sic)
She signed off with a heartfelt plea: “Please don’t ignore changes to your body.”
The 42-year-old’s announcement was met with an outpouring of support from the fashion world. Model Lily Aldridge responded with words of comfort, writing: “Sending love and healing prayers.”
Fellow model Karen Elson also rallied around Ms Stone, commenting: “Lara, sending you so much love and strength. We are here for you.”
A familiar face in the modelling world, Ms Stone was thrust into the mainstream spotlight of showbiz thanks to being married to comedian and children’s author David Walliams.
The pair tied the knot in 2010 at Claridge’s Hotel in London but separated five years later. Their divorce was finalised in September 2015.
Together they have a 13-year-old son, Alfred. Speaking about their co-parenting arrangement, Ms Stone has previously said: “He’s the happiest kid. Really happy to be home with me and really happy to be home with his dad, so what more could you ask for?”
The model went on to find love again through the dating app Tinder, meeting British property developer David Grievson in 2018.
Following a two-year engagement, they married in July 2021 and welcomed their son Bob in July 2023.
Throughout her career, Ms Stone has worked with some of fashion’s most prestigious houses, including Chanel, Prada, Versace and Victoria’s Secret, establishing herself as one of the industry’s most recognisable faces.
Ms Stone currently lives in London with her husband, Mr Grievson, and their two children.
