King Charles and Queen Camilla stunned spectators at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony by making a surprise entrance, emerging from a life-sized Doctor Who Tardis.

In an unprecedented moment at The Hydro arena, the Head of the Commonwealth and the Queen stepped out of the iconic blue police box, officially kicking off the sporting event.

The highly guarded secret sequence began with a three-and-a-half-minute pre-recorded video broadcast to the thousands inside the arena.

The video followed the famous time machine on a chaotic journey across Scotland, accidentally piloted by six-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy and Scottish actor Greg McHugh.

Much to the surprise of the Seventh Doctor, played by original actor Sylvester McCoy, the rogue Tardis materialised at a host of historic landmarks.

Audiences watched as it visited Loch Ness, Edinburgh Castle, the Kelpies sculptures in Falkirk, the University of Glasgow, and the Victorian Glenfinnan Viaduct, before taking a detour to the Scottish Highlands during the Jurassic period.

Eventually, the time machine arrived at the grounds of Balmoral Castle, the traditional highland home of the Royal Family.

The physical Tardis then materialised upon a specially designed garden set constructed onstage.

As the tension reached its peak, the doors swung open to reveal the King and Queen.

Their Majesties emerged onto the stage, accompanied by processional music; Charles and Camilla then made their way down a circular ramp to take their seats in the Royal Box.

As soon as Their Majesties were seated, an 18-strong ensemble from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Youth Chorus began playing.

Standing among the scenic garden paths of the stage design, the young choir delivered a rendition of the national anthem, God Save the King.

The traditional moment was followed by acclaimed electro-folk duo Valtos and their accompanying musicians.

Before the ceremony officially began, the arena crowd was warmed up during a two-hour pre-show featuring Glasgow-based DJ Hu-Sane and hosts Des, Adele, and Grado.

In a nod to the 2014 opening ceremony, Grado made an appearance dressed as a Teacake, a beloved national snack and lightning rod for Scottish identity.

The crowd was also introduced to the official 2026 mascot, a unicorn named Finnie, before the countdown commenced for Charles and Camilla’s entrance.
