Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been blasted amid the Labour leadership crisis as drivers could take advantage of the turmoil to avoid car tax.

Sir Keir Starmer is fighting for his future as leader of the UK amid mounting pressure from inside Labour that could see a host of potential candidates take his job in Number 10.

After a Labour MP stepped down in Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham became the latest candidate to potentially take the reins from Sir Starmer, alongside Wes Streeting, Angela Rayner and Ed Miliband.

Further insult has been added to injury for Keir Starmer after a van company pulled off a lookalike stunt outside Westminster.

A fake Keir Starmer was spotted loading boxes into the back of a company van from Vanaways in a further blow to the embattled Prime Minister.

Some of the boxes were labelled “tax rises”, “broken promises”, “U-turns” and “Westminster chaos”.

The new campaign from Vanaways ties into the company’s slogan, “Vans, without the drama”, as the Prime Minister faces yet another tough day in Downing Street.

Mr Starmer’s lookalike was helping to “clear out the chaos” in Westminster after he was spotted stepping into the branded Vanaways van.

VANAWAYS

In a bid to help struggling motorists and tradespeople, Vanaways has launched a limited-time offer for drivers looking to get their hands on a new van over the next week.

Anyone who quotes “Keir” at the point of purchase will receive a huge 50 per cent discount on their first year’s road tax.

Van drivers were slapped with hefty new charges at the start of the new financial year in April, with many now facing costs of £360 a year.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed tax changes in the Autumn Budget last year, which have resulted in millions of drivers paying more to keep their vehicles on the road.

The stunt was designed to poke fun at the embattled Prime Minister, while also highlighting the difficulties faced by businesses

Anyone buying a new petrol or diesel that has a large emissions output rate could even face costs approaching £6,000 in first year tax rates alone.

Adam Carter, director at Vanaways, acknowledged the difficulties of running a business without “all the added drama coming out of Westminster”.

He said: “We work with tradespeople, business owners and van drivers every day, and there’s definitely a sense that many are fed up with the constant chaos, rising costs and political noise.

“This stunt is just a bit of fun, but there’s a real message behind it too – British businesses want things to be simpler.”

Andy Burnham was previously blocked from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election amid concerns of a leadership challenge

Sir Keir Starmer is expected to face a leadership challenge in the near future following the resignation of Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner, who was cleared by HMRC yesterday.

Mr Streeting said he had “lost confidence” in the Prime Minister following a string of gaffes by the Government, and has since been replaced by James Murray.

Andy Burnham could put further pressure on Sir Starmer if he were to win the Makerfield by-election after outgoing MP Josh Simons announced he was stepping down.

The current Mayor of Greater Manchester was previously MP for Leigh between 2001 and 2017, and has made his intentions clear to run for a place in the Commons.
