Flames could be seen on the roof of the empty building on Saturday night

The cause of a fire at a former nightclub in Wigan town centre remains unknown, police have said, as an investigation is launched into the cause of the blaze on Saturday night.

Six fire engine crews rushed to the empty building in King Street after it caught fire at about 22:30 GMT.

Nearby premises were evacuated and the area was cordoned off for safety.

A Greater Manchester Police representative said: “The cause of the fire is not yet known and an investigation will begin once it is safe to do so.”

The fire was put out at about 03:50 GMT by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), who said the area remains unsafe to enter.

It will stay shut while the structural integrity of the building is assessed, a GMFRS spokesman said.
