His curling effort from inside the box gave Stockport the lead in their second leg win over Stevenage at Edgeley Park as they progressed 3-0 on aggregate.

“He must have aspirations to play every week in the Championship because he has the ability,” Bristol Rovers boss Steve Evans said on Sky Sports after the game.

“He loves it here [at Stockport] and they love him. I think it’s more consistency in his game [that’s needed].

“I think Louie would accept that’s been a problem for him in recent times but he’s got a big stage next week at Wembley.”

Barry failed to score in either of his Championship loan spells – at Sheffield United earlier this season or at Hull City in the second half of last term.

But perhaps having a chance of playing in the second tier next season among familiar surroundings might be what he needs to make an impact.

However, before that there is a small matter of a play-off final against either Bolton Wanderers or Bradford City next week.

“I’d never been to Wembley before this season and I’ve come back from injury, come back with the lads here and am going to go to Wembley twice – I can’t wait,” Barry told Radio Manchester.

“I feel like whatever happens, we’ve got the quality and we’ve got the confidence in our group that whoever we play we can get over the line,” he added.
