Buckingham Palace faces the task of finding a successor to Sir Clive Alderton, with the King’s principal private secretary requiring a combination of constitutional expertise, diplomatic experience and personal discretion.

Sir Clive announced on Monday that he intends to leave the role within the coming year after more than two decades of royal service.

His replacement will inherit one of the most demanding positions in the Royal Household, overseeing the monarch’s official business while acting as a key adviser to the King and Queen.

The role requires extensive knowledge of the politics, history and culture of not only the United Kingdom but also the 14 other realms where the King is head of state, including Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

A strong understanding of the Church of England is also essential because the monarch serves as its supreme governor.

Knowledge of military affairs is another key requirement, reflecting the sovereign’s role as head of the armed forces.

The position also demands the ability to handle sensitive family matters with discretion.

As a source told the Times, this can include offering guidance when difficulties arise involving “a brother or perhaps a son.”

According to the newspaper, the only guaranteed break in the working week is a single hour on Sundays while the King and Queen attend church.

Former colleagues have highlighted Sir Clive’s personal qualities, describing him as intuitive, kind and resilient.

They said he made a point of welcoming new members of staff and their families to the Royal Household.

A sense of humour has also been identified as an important attribute, with colleagues saying it is valuable to know when to make the King and Queen laugh during challenging periods.

The role requires the ability to anticipate potential issues before they arise.

One colleague compared Sir Clive’s approach to “playing five-dimensional chess”, thinking several moves ahead until arriving at a theoretical future scenario that has “an uncanny habit of coming true.”

Another skill highlighted by colleagues was what they described as “speaking King” – explaining to visitors the distinction between “a royal reaction and a royal decision.”

The successful candidate will also need significant diplomatic experience.

The principal private secretary works with Governments and heads of state around the world, including in North America, Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Vatican, while helping to ensure the King remains separate from day-to-day party politics.

The role also involves close coordination with senior members of the Royal Household, including the Lord Chamberlain, the keeper of the privy purse, the master of the household and the communications director.

In Whitehall, the principal private secretary is part of what has been described as a “golden triangle” alongside the cabinet secretary and the Prime Minister’s principal private secretary, with the three officials playing key roles in the operation of Britain’s constitutional arrangements.

Sir Clive, who is approaching his 60th birthday, has served through several significant moments in recent royal history, including the accession of King Charles, the Coronation and the transition of leadership within the Commonwealth.

He has also overseen numerous state visits, including the King’s recent visit to the United States, and has played a central role in the day-to-day operation of the monarchy during a period of significant change.
