GLP-1 weight loss injections have become extraordinarily popular across Britain and beyond, yet the glossy transformation photographs flooding social media don’t always tell the complete story.

Betty Billigham, a certified trainer and nutrition coach, recently took to TikTok to share her remarkable journey with Zepbound, during which she shed an impressive 7st 2lb.

“Everyone loves a good before and after, the dramatic side by side, the smaller body, the big smile,” she explained in her video. “I have one of those, I lost 100lbs on Zepbound, and I went from a size 16 to a size 4.”

The American noted she now wears a US size 4, a measurement she had never achieved throughout her adult life.

However, the wellness coach was candid about the challenges that accompanied her dramatic physical transformation.

“What the before and after photos didn’t show was the hair loss. I was not prepared for the hair loss,” she said. “I lost a significant amount of hair about six months into my weight loss.”

She acknowledged that beginning the medication while four months post-partum likely contributed to the thinning, though she had previously enjoyed thick, healthy hair throughout her life.

But the issue of excess skin has also proved troublesome. She noted: “My thighs and my butt are the areas where I’ve always carried the most weight, and are now the areas where I have the most loose skin.”

Recent scientific research has uncovered additional concerns surrounding these increasingly fashionable medications.

A study published in Nature Health has identified side effects that pharmaceutical manufacturers have not listed on their official documentation.

American researchers analysed posts from roughly 70,000 Reddit users over a period exceeding six years to examine symptoms reported by individuals taking GLP-1 drugs.

Their findings revealed that menstrual irregularities and temperature-related issues, such as chills and hot flushes, have emerged as potential consequences not presently acknowledged in clinical paperwork.

Injections, including Ozempic and Mounjaro, were originally developed to manage diabetes but have since gained considerable traction for their capacity to curb appetite and produce swift weight reduction.

Despite these unexpected physical changes, Billigham maintains a remarkably balanced perspective on her weight loss experience.

She observed that her body proportions had shifted considerably, with her lower half becoming noticeably smaller than before.

“Your body changes in ways that you don’t always necessarily expect,” she reflected. “I’ve always been someone who carries more weight in my lower half. But on this journey, my body shape is changing; my lower body is getting a little bit smaller, which is changing the proportions of my body.”

But the trainer maintains that the benefits of the jabs outweigh the side effects, concluding her clip with the message: “While the medication is a tool, the lifestyle that we’re building while we’re on it is ours. Nobody can take that away from us.”
