The Greek Street roundabout near the A6 is due to reopen above the railway in spring 2026

Rail services will be suspended in Stockport at the weekend so work can continue underneath the Greater Manchester town’s new £20m Greek Street bridge.

It will affect passengers using the West Coast Main Line.

Here are the key details for planning journeys.

What’s happening?

Network Rail will close the railway in Stockport on 4 and 5 October for the work.

The reconstruction of the bridge – which comprises of a roundabout over the rail line – was completed during a previous 21-day closure of the railway in August.

It is part of a project that began in 2024 to replace the old bridge, underneath which 400 passenger and 50 freight services passed daily.

Workers now need to remove a wall in the centre of the tracks and reinstate the road and walls on the roundabout above the bridge.

How will this affect journeys?

Passengers travelling between Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent are advised to check the National Rail website.

Rail replacement buses will be in operation during the weekend closure.

Will there be more disruption in future?

Engineers also plan to work on the structure on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The roundabout is set to reopen in spring 2026 and the new structure’s lifespan is estimated to be 120 years.

Network Rail project manager William Brandon said: “I am immensely proud of the team who worked so hard to deliver this once-in-a-lifetime project over the summer.

“I am very grateful to the local community and passengers for their ongoing patience and understanding during the work.”
