Jamie Carragher is reportedly facing a bankruptcy petition brought by HM Revenue and Customs over an alleged unpaid tax bill.

Solicitors acting for HMRC are said to have filed the case against the former Liverpool and England defender at the High Court in London on Wednesday, August 26.

The reported legal action does not mean Carragher has been declared bankrupt.

A court would have to consider the petition before any bankruptcy order could be made.

HMRC declined to discuss Carragher’s reported case when approached by City AM, maintaining a policy of not commenting on the affairs of individual taxpayers.

However, a spokesperson explained that bankruptcy petitions are generally pursued only after other attempts to resolve an outstanding liability have failed.

“We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans,” the spokesperson said.

“We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”

GB News has contacted Carragher’s representatives for comment.

The 48-year-old has become one of British football’s most recognisable pundits since retiring from professional football in 2013.

Carragher is a prominent member of Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage and regularly appears alongside former Manchester United rival Gary Neville on Monday Night Football.

The former defender was on television on Monday evening to analyse the opening weekend of the Premier League season and provide punditry for Chelsea’s visit to Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Carragher also works on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage, where appearances alongside Thierry Henry, Micah Richards and presenter Kate Scott have attracted a substantial international audience.

Further media commitments include regular appearances on the Stick to Football podcast and YouTube programme, which forms part of Neville’s Overlap media company.

Carragher spent his entire senior playing career with Liverpool after progressing through the club’s academy.

The Bootle-born defender made his first-team debut in 1997 and went on to register more than 500 appearances before hanging up his boots.

Carragher won 38 England caps and represented the national team at major tournaments, including the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

At club level, Carragher lifted the Champions League following Liverpool’s remarkable comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005.

Carragher’s extensive medal collection also includes two FA Cups and three League Cups, while further honours arrived in the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.

A Premier League title remained the notable omission from Carragher’s playing career, although Liverpool later ended the long wait for the trophy in 2020.
