A man in his 40s has died after slipping from a notorious ridge on Blencathra in the Lake District.

A North West Ambulance helicopter was dispatched to Sharp Edge following the fall, but rescuers were unable to resuscitate the walker.

The narrow ridge posed significant challenges for the aerial response.

It required the helicopter crew to identify the casualty’s precise position before collecting members of the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team and flying them directly to the start of the ridge line, cutting down on critical response time.

Police have confirmed the death, which occurred last Thursday at approximately 2pm, is not being treated as suspicious.

Sharp Edge is classified as a Grade I scramble.

This means that it typically allows experienced hill walkers to navigate without ropes.

However, it ranks among the most demanding routes of its kind anywhere in the Lake District.

The ridge itself is exceptionally narrow.

It has earned a reputation as a knife-edge traverse that demands considerable nerve.

What sets this particular stretch of Blencathra apart from much of the surrounding terrain is its slate composition, which becomes treacherously slick in wet conditions, offering minimal grip underfoot.

The popular route ultimately leads walkers to Blencathra’s summit, which stands at 2,772ft above sea level.

According to the British Mountaineering Council, adverse weather conditions can transform Sharp Edge from a “route that most hill walkers with a head for heights can tackle, to a slippery, scaly beast of a scramble”.

Wind and rain compound the dangers on Grade I scrambles, where despite the relatively accessible classification, any fall can have severe consequences.

The route is often compared to Crib Goch on Snowdon, another well-known Grade I scramble where ropes are not generally required, but exposure and conditions can prove perilous.

Cumbria Police have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Back in May, an unrelated British hiker was found dead after an unsuccessful 48-hour rescue mission in Spain.

The 61-year-old man was reported missing on Thursday.

He was in the municipality of Posada de Valdeón, in the Picos de Europa National Park.

His body was found in the Moeño canal, emergency services have said.
