Floods fears recede as amber rain warning downgraded | UK News

An amber weather warning for heavy rain and possible flooding for south-west Scotland has been downgraded by forecasters.

The Met Office issued the alert on Saturday as a band of very heavy rain moved in, prompting fears that homes and buildings in the region could be flooded.

While the rain has not been as heavy as predicted, a lesser yellow warning remains in force for much of western Scotland with heavy localised downpours forecast.

In Inverclyde, the A78 road in Greenock remains shut in both directions due to flooding after a night of heavy rain.

Traffic Scotland said the road between the town and Inverkip remained shut in both directions because of water on the carriageway.

A diversion is in place, taking traffic along the coast road via Gourock.

ScotRail had earlier cancelled train services between Kilmarnock and Dumfries ahead of the amber warning.

The Met Office update said there was still a chance of flooding and travel disruption while drivers would face difficult conditions in some places.

The yellow warning for rain remains in force throughout Sunday in the west of Scotland extending up to the north-west Highlands, Skye and the Inner Hebrides.

In Dumfries and Galloway, forecasters said some areas will see 4in (100mm) of rain accumulating over the weekend, with about another inch (20-30mm) falling on Sunday before the wet weather moves away in the early hours of Monday.
