Emergency services responded to two distinct incidents at HMP Chelmsford on Sunday afternoon, with multiple crews dispatched to the Essex facility.

A cell fire required firefighters’ intervention whilst, in a separate occurrence, an inmate needed hospital treatment after allegedly ingesting a foreign object.

HMP Chelmsford was the same institution that oversaw the bungled accidental release of migrant sex offender Hadush Kebatu last month.

The incidents on Sunday prompted a significant emergency response, with numerous ambulances, fire engines and specialist vehicles arriving at the prison from approximately 1pm.

A Prison Service spokesman confirmed: “Emergency Services attended HMP Chelmsford earlier today and one prisoner was taken to hospital for treatment.”

Firefighters were summoned to the prison at 1.46pm following reports of a blaze in one of the cells.

The fire was successfully extinguished by 2.07pm, approximately 21 minutes after crews arrived on scene.

Essex County Fire & Rescue Service confirmed their attendance, with a spokesman stating: “We were called to a fire in a cell at 1.46pm and extinguished it by 2.07pm.”

The prison service clarified that firefighters were called to verify the blaze had been completely extinguished.

Crucially, no injuries resulted from the fire incident, with authorities confirming nobody suffered harm from the flames.

In the separate medical incident, a prisoner was transported to hospital as a precautionary measure following reports that he had ingested a foreign object.

The nature of the object remains unspecified by authorities.

The East of England Ambulance Service dispatched substantial resources to the prison, including an ambulance, an officer vehicle and two Hazardous Area Response Team units.

However, their assistance was ultimately not needed.

An ambulance service spokesperson explained: “We were called just before 1.50pm on Sunday, November 9, to reports of a fire at HMP Chelmsford.

“We were stood down shortly after arriving on scene as our services were not required.”
