Firefighters are tackling a blaze on moorland near a reservoir.

The fire started on the moors above Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield, Saddleworth, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said.

In a post on social media, the service said crews “continue to work with partner agencies to contain the fire and prevent further spread”.

They warned residents and visitors in surrounding areas to keep windows and doors closed if affected by smoke.

“Due to high winds, smoke from the fire may travel significant distances,” GMFRS said.

The service said the cause of the blaze was being investigated and also confirmed it was not impacting the memorial tree plantation in the area.

Paul Fearnhead from GMFRS said it was “a well developed wildfire and this is spreading across the moorland aided by high temperatures of the wind”.

“GMFRS have had enough resources to maintain and slow its progression temperatures and high winds have been very challenging for the firefighters.

“The heat is tremendous today – up in the 30 degrees”

He said there were also “very very high” winds which were “fairly relentless” and these were adding to some of the complications they faced in extinguishing the fire.

Fearnhead said such fires were also dangerous to wildlife.

Additional crews arrived on site to assess the area throughout Sunday afternoon, while a helicopter provided by reservoir and land owner United Utilities has been circling overhead and dropping water on the blaze.

The efforts are expected to continue into the evening, a GMFRS spokesperson told the .
