Electric car owners around the UK could save hundreds of pounds a year thanks to a new EV home charging offer.

There are estimated to be around two million electric vehicles across the country, with more being added to the road every day.

Fresh data shows that zero emission vehicles make up one in four new car sales, while EVs captured a market share of 30 per cent last month.

Electric car chargepoint operators continue to unveil new measures to support drivers in their transition from petrol and diesel to electric.

E.ON Next has announced a new partnership with myenergi to give motorists with a compatible zappi-branded charger access to its Next Drive Smart tariff.

Anyone who benefits from this tariff will see rates as low as 8p/kWh across their whole home from midnight until 6am.

This will dramatically reduce their bills and allow them to charge their electric vehicles on one of the cheapest tariff rates on the market.

Customers can use the E.ON Next Home app to set their charging preferences, allowing them to prioritise charging at night, when energy prices are at their lowest.

Estimates suggest that the average driver could save £435 a year with the home charging tariff

A new perk of the tariff also allows drivers to schedule additional charging throughout the day when grid capacity is available.

The same 8p per kWh rate would apply across the whole home, not just the electric vehicle charger, during daytime hours.

E.ON said motorists who travel an average of 8,000 miles a year could save up to £435 compared to those charging using a standard variable tariff.

Steve Davies, director of strategy and commercial at E.ON Next, said: “With Next Drive Smart, plugging in at home unlocks cheaper electricity for longer across the home.”

He noted that the new partnership with myenergi would allow E.ON Next app customers to automatically access off-peak rates.

Mr Davies said this could be done when grid capacity is available, without monitoring, manual scheduling and “no extra effort”.

E.ON confirmed that both zappi 2.1 and zappi GLO charges integrate with the Next Drive Smart tariff and are compatible with any electric vehicle.

The offer applies to existing and new customers, while drivers are also able to install a compatible charger through E.ON Next.

Ben Harris, head of energy and mobility at myenergi, said the company was “delighted” to be working alongside E.ON Next.

“Our integration with the Next Drive Smart tariff means customers now have straightforward access to smarter, cheaper EV charging, without having to think about it,” he added.
