Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris, 58, has regained consciousness for a second time following a medical emergency that struck earlier this month.

However, it has been confirmed that he continues to be treated in intensive care.

A representative for founding band member Verdine White confirmed the news on Thursday, stating that Mr Paris faces two major operations as part of his ongoing treatment and will remain in the ICU longer than initially anticipated.

His wife, Kathy Merrick, added to People Magazine: “This journey is definitely a marathon, but JP is fighting every single day and our hope is strong.

“John has already overcome obstacles that once seemed impossible, and while there is still a long road ahead, each step forward gives everyone around him renewed hope.”

The emergency occurred on August 6 whilst the legendary group were midway through their Sing A Song All Night Long Tour alongside Lionel Richie.

The band announced via a now-deleted social media post that their scheduled performance at Chase Center in San Francisco would not go ahead “due to a medical emergency involving a member of our band.”

At the time, the group declined to identify which member had been affected.

It was roughly a week before further details emerged when Shelly Clark White, wife of founding member Verdine White, and family friend Tazz Cole published a Facebook statement explaining that the silence had been deliberate.

“As information has begun to circulate publicly, we feel it’s important that everyone hears the story directly from us so there is no confusion about where things stand today,” they said.

Mr Paris had initially shown signs of recovery when he first woke from the induced coma, but that progress proved temporary. Doctors were forced to sedate him again in order to stabilise his condition.

His second awakening, however, has brought more sustained improvement as his blood pressure held steady and his breathing remained strong.

This gave his medical team the opportunity to carry out further assessments.

Those additional tests provided clinicians with a clearer picture of what Mr Paris’s body required and they determined that two major surgical procedures will be necessary.

As a result, Mr Paris will spend longer in intensive care than had been hoped while doctors prepare him for the next stage of treatment.

A GoFundMe campaign with a target of $90,000 (roughly £66,000) has been set up to assist Mr Paris’s family during what is expected to be a prolonged recovery period.

In Mr Paris’s absence, former Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Sonny Emory, who served with the group between 1987 and 1999, has stepped in to cover duties on the tour.

Mr Paris has been behind the kit for the band since 2001.

Formed in Chicago in 1969, Earth, Wind & Fire have shifted 90 million records worldwide, collected six Grammy Awards and earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, with hits including September, Boogie Wonderland and Shining Star.
