Christopher Rhys-Jones marks his 95th birthday today, with the Duchess of Edinburgh’s father having already kicked off the celebrations earlier this week.

The retired sales director joined his daughter Sophie and son-in-law Prince Edward at Royal Ascot on Wednesday for an early birthday outing.

At 94, he was spotted alongside the Duke of Edinburgh, both men dressed smartly in suits, while Sophie wore an elegant black dress nearby.

The family gathering at the prestigious racing event served as a fitting prelude to his milestone birthday, demonstrating the close relationship he maintains with his daughter and the wider Royal Family.

Royal watchers were delighted to catch a glimpse of Sophie’s father at the event, with many commenting on how well he appeared.

One admirer noted it was wonderful to see him “still going strong,” while another expressed surprise at his vitality, remarking that he looked fantastic for his age.

His sartorial choices also drew praise, with one fan particularly taken with his striped attire, describing him as “a very smartly dressed man.”

Such appearances by Christopher have become cherished moments for those who follow the royal family, offering a rare window into the Duchess of Edinburgh’s personal life and her enduring connection with her father.

Christopher is a familiar face at Ascot, having attended the racing event in 2025 where he was seen socialising with Princess Anne and Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence alongside the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

His most notable Ascot moment came in 2014 when he was granted the honour of participating in the carriage procession, sharing the ride with the then Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Beyond Ascot, Christopher frequently attends other equestrian events with his family, including the Cheltenham Races and Royal Windsor Horse Show.

He was also present to support Sophie when she completed her Diamond Challenge, a cycling endeavour that took her from Edinburgh to Buckingham Palace.

The bond between Christopher and his daughter has grown even stronger following the passing of Sophie’s mother, Mary Rhys-Jones, who died from stomach cancer in 2005.

Speaking in 2021, Sophie reflected on her loss: “To this day, I miss her very much and there are moments where I hear some music she loved or I do something I know she’d have wanted to hear about, which makes her early departure very hard.”

Sophie added: “She has missed out on so much, and I’m particularly sad that she hasn’t seen my children grow up or seen how my work has grown and developed.”
