Motorists are being made aware of new rules being introduced in August that could impact them behind the wheel every day.

Labour could move forward with new plans first unveiled through its Road Safety Strategy, while an update could be provided on the future of the digital driving licence scheme.

With new rules being introduced over the coming weeks, GB News has rounded up the most important driving law changes in August that could impact you.

MOT tests

New rules being introduced on August 3, 2026, will see garages across the UK given access to new features that could reduce fraud within MOT testing.

Around 2,500 garages across Great Britain will be given new abilities to take photos of vehicles when conducting an MOT test.

The feature will allow MOT testers to take and upload a photo of a vehicle during the test to prove that the vehicle was present when the test was being taken.

MOT test changes are confirmed to be launching in August, while the Government could also provide updates on driving licences

New guidance states that the photo will provide additional evidence and help monitor service performance and how testers are using the feature.

It will deter fraudulent MOT activity, reduce the risk of certificates being issued where no vehicle is present and support vehicle identity verification.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) added that the measures are intended to improve confidence in MOT Testing and contribute to road safety objectives.

There have been two previous trials featuring 311 garages, which received “overwhelmingly positive” feedback, including ease of use and little impact on overall testing times.

Road safety

Labour introduced the new Road Safety Strategy earlier this year with great expectations to slash the number of people killed or seriously injured by 65 per cent by 2035.

Some of the key measures featured in the Road Safety Strategy included strengthening punishments for motoring offences, introducing a minimum learning period for learners and mandatory eyesight tests for elderly motorists.

Five consultations were launched at the start of the year, with the Government only responding to one of them so far.

The Department for Transport said it would mandate 18 vehicle safety technologies for mass-produced vehicles in Great Britain type approval.

The measures are being introduced to enhance vehicle safety, improve casualty outcomes, align safety standards and encourage innovation.

Labour could still decide to introduce rules for elderly people to require eyesight tests, which could eventually develop into cognitive decline.

Drivers over the age of 70 are required to renew their driving licence every three years, compared to every 10 years for younger age groups.

Driving licences

Labour is understood to still be working on the development of the digital driving licence, despite Prime Minister Andy Burnham scrapping the digital ID.

The Government Digital Service stated recently that it was working to introduce a Chat feature to the GOV.UK App, which is where the digital licence would be stored.

Alongside the DVLA, the GDS confirmed that motorists would be able to view their driver and vehicle information directly within the GOV.UK App.
