Drivers have been warned to expect delays this afternoon after a major motorway was forced shut following a police incident.

The M5 in Gloucestershire is currently closed in both directions between J14 (Dursley) and J13 (Stroud), with National Highways warning that there is no current timeline for when the road will reopen.

Traffic officers are on scene and working with all emergency services, with plans being made to clear the traffic caught within the closure.

Normal traffic conditions are expected to return by the earliest 5pm today, although there is no official time frame in place.

Drivers have been urged to follow the diverted route in place, which will help alleviate some of the traffic built up in the junctions.

The diversion instructs road users travelling northbound to follow the Solid Triangle diversion symbol on road signs.

Drivers should exit the M5 northbound at J14 and turn left onto the B4509, at the junction with the A38, turn right and join the A38 northbound.

From here, they should continue on the A38 northbound, passing through the villages of Cambridge and Claypits, to then re-join the M5 northbound at J13.

Normal road conditions are expected to return by 5pm later today

For motorists travelling southbound, they have been advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs.

The diversion advises drivers to exit the M5 southbound at J13 and take the third exit at the roundabout, onto the A419.

Follow the A419 for a short distance to the A419/A38 roundabout. At the A419/A38 roundabout, take the first exit onto the A38 southbound.

From here, drivers should follow the A38 southbound for 10 miles until the A38/B4509 slip. At the top of the slip road, drivers need to turn left onto the B4509. Follow for a short distance and turn right at the crossroads to rejoin the M5 south at J14.

The M5 has been closed due to a police-led incident this morning

National Highways shared: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
