Drivers will face new costs when travelling in London from today as costs for the Silvertown Tunnel are hiked, just over a year after it was officially opened.

Transport for London has confirmed that it will be raising prices for the Silvertown Tunnel from today (Monday, September 21, 2026).

The Silvertown Tunnel is a key access route beneath the River Thames and connects Silvertown in east London to the Greenwich Peninsula.

Changes to the price of the route were announced earlier this year to account for inflation and ensure traffic is managed effectively.

Prices are set to rise between 3.3 per cent and five per cent, depending on what the vehicle is and when they travel through the tunnel.

TfL stated at the time of its opening in 2025 that the daily road user charges would also cover the cost of building the tunnel and any maintenance.

Silvertown Tunnel charges apply between 6am and 10pm every day in both directions, with peak times occurring between 6am and 10am northbound and 4pm and 7pm southbound.

Charges apply to the vast majority of vehicles on all bank holidays, with the exception of Christmas Day (December 25).

New charges for the Silvertown Tunnel in London will be rolled out today

  • Heavy goods vehicles – £5 (off-peak), £10 (peak and online charges)

The Silvertown Tunnel has already led to a drop in congestion and emissions in the area

Since it opened, analysis shows that the Silvertown Tunnel has contributed to a 58 per cent drop in peak journeys northbound and led to a 17 per cent fall in nitrogen dioxide concentrations.

Christina Calderato from TfL explained that the tunnel user charge is designed to manage traffic demand and encourage the use of public transport.

She added: “Without the tunnel user charge, there would be more traffic and congestion, with negative impacts on air quality and journey times.

“A small increase to the tunnel user charges to account for inflation would ensure the user charge remains at the right level to manage traffic demand at the tunnels and achieve the project’s other objectives effectively.”
