Catherine, Princess of Wales selected an ensemble combining structured British tailoring with subtle historical references for Friday’s trip to Belfast.

The Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in Belfast for a series of engagements focused on early intervention and youth support.

Together, William and Catherine highlighted ongoing efforts under the Prince of Wales’s Homewards initiative to address the root causes of homelessness.

The royal visit brought the Waleses to key community sites across South Belfast.

This included The Commons on Ormeau Road, a former church repurposed into a community hub designed to provide local youth with employment pathways and personal stability.

For the occasion, Catherine wore a £725 ‘Kensie’ dark green checked wool midi skirt by Emilia Wickstead, paired with a ruffled Knatchbull blouse and a bespoke black tailored coat by Catherine Walker.

The choice of a checked pattern during a visit to Northern Ireland carried historic precedent.

Although check and tartan patterns are frequently associated with Scotland, the island of Ireland possesses its own long-standing textile tradition.

The earliest surviving specimen of tartan recorded on the island is the 17th-century Ulster Tartan, uncovered in County Londonderry, which dates back over four centuries.

Rather than selecting a registered clan pattern or a prominent national weave, the Princess opted for a neutral, non-partisan check.

The deep forest green tones offered a direct homage to Ireland, while the checked print subtly nodded to the weaving heritage of the province without any accidental political associations.

The outcome was practical for autumn weather and entirely non-controversial.

The Princess complemented the outfit with a £55 small Mulberry Amberley handbag in forest green leather, maintaining the cohesive green colour palette, alongside £710 black Gianvito Rossi heels.

Catherine wore Cartier’s £3,200 Trinity earrings, a classic design featuring three interlocking bands of yellow, white, and rose gold.

Long recognised as an emblem of unity, fidelity, and friendship, the three-metal motif offered a discreet underline to a visit centred on community collaboration.

Throughout the day, the Waleses met with frontline charity workers, business partners, and young people benefiting from local training and housing programmes.

Northern Ireland serves as one of six flagship locations selected for the five-year Homewards programme, launched by the Royal Foundation to demonstrate that homelessness can be made rare, brief, and unrepeated.
