Car insurance: Motorists could slash costs by £233 using revolutionary new tool

Motorists have been urged to try a new artificial intelligence tool that could cut their car insurance bills by an average of £233.

Price comparison giant MoneySuperMarket has launched a feature called Price Optimiser, designed to highlight hidden factors that may be pushing up premiums.

The company explained how the tool examines the details in a customer’s quote and pinpoints areas that could be inflating the cost, including estimated annual mileage, job title, and address information.

Between February 12 and 16, 83 per cent of drivers who completed the Price Optimiser process secured a cheaper quote after acting on its suggestions.

Overall, more than 80 per cent of motorists who used the tool and followed its recommendations found lower premiums.

Once a driver receives a quote through the site, the system automatically analyses the information submitted and walks users through each factor affecting their premium, explaining what could be increasing the cost.

The tool uses insights from MoneySuperMarket’s Car Insurance AI Insights report to identify practical ways to cut costs.

Importantly, it only suggests legitimate changes that customers are allowed to make, meaning motorists remain in full control of their information.

Using DVLA MOT data, the system can identify whether a driver may have overestimated how far they travel each year, something that can unnecessarily increase premiums, experts warned.

It also flagged cases where comprehensive cover may actually be cheaper than third-party insurance, which many assume to be the least expensive option.

The tool reminded customers that paying monthly often includes interest charges, meaning a single annual payment could save money overall.

Optional extras were clearly highlighted too, so customers can see whether add-ons were increasing their base premium and remove anything they do not need.

Lis Barton, Chief Customer Officer at MONY Group, which owns MoneySuperMarket, said the aim is to make the system clearer and fairer for drivers.

She added: “Small changes can make a big difference, and this tool shows that clearly so drivers can choose what works best for them.

“It’s all about making the process simpler and helping people save money with confidence backed up by our Price Promise and a £15 SuperSaveClub reward.”

The company has also launched a new AI assistant, allowing motorists to ask questions about policies they are considering before buying, helping them decide whether a particular level of cover suits their needs.

Drivers have faced higher car insurance costs throughout the years

The launch comes at a time when car insurance prices remain a major household expense, despite some recent easing in prices.

Figures from the Association of British Insurers showed the average motor insurance premium fell by £60 in the year to June 2025, bringing the typical cost down to £562.

However, pressure on insurers remains intense with ABI members paying out a record £3.1billion in car insurance claims in the second quarter of 2025 alone. Of that total, £2.1 billion went on vehicle repairs.

Mark Shepherd, Head of General Insurance Policy at the ABI, said: “It’s encouraging to see motor premiums have fallen for a second consecutive quarter, offering some much-needed relief to drivers. But with the cost of cover still weighing on household finances, we must not lose momentum in tackling the persistent pressures driving up claims.”
