A red brick building thought to have served as the town’s historic bakehouse could face the wrecking ball following a demolition request.

The request was lodged with Maldon District Council about the dated structure in Burnham-on-Crouch.

The building, situated on Belvedere Road, stands within a designated conservation area, yet this protected status may not be enough to save it from destruction.

The property’s current owner described the structure as being in a “very dangerous condition”.

Concerns about safety prompted an application to tear it down.

Local heritage enthusiasts now fear the potential loss of what they consider an important piece of the town’s architectural past.

The demolition request was filed with the local authority towards the end of February.

It sought permission to remove the structure entirely.

Documentation accompanying the application states that the building should be demolished “as it is a safety risk to residents, neighbours, and pedestrians using the adjacent pavement”.

The owner’s concerns centre on the perceived threat the deteriorating structure poses to those living nearby and members of the public walking past the site.

Council planners are currently assessing the submission.

No determination has yet been reached on whether the historic building will be permitted to be razed.

However, community members have voiced their disappointment at the prospect of losing the heritage building.

One resident commented: “I don’t know the owner and have absolutely nothing against them.

“I just think it would be a bad decision to demolish it.”

Another local expressed similar sentiments.

They said: “It’s a great shame that so many old buildings are not looked after.

“And get demolished, losing our heritage.”

The remarks reflect broader concerns about preserving the town’s architectural character amid development pressures.

Maldon District Council has not provided any statement on the matter whilst the planning application continues to be processed.
