A British freestyle skier has won gold in the freeski slopestyle at the X Games in Aspen.

Kirsty Muir, 21, achieved a score of 93.66 in the first of her three runs which proved too high for her rivals to respond.

Canada’s Naomi Urness won silver with a score of 85, while Mathilde Grimaud of Switzerland came in third with a score of 80.00.

It is the third title GB has won at the games, after a win for Mia Brookes in the women’s snowboard slopestyle and Zoe Atkin in freeski superpipe.

The event had been delayed by 24 hours because of poor weather in Colorado before given the green flag to go ahead.

Muir also claimed silver in the big air event with a score of 94.00.

First place went to Grimaud, and Canadian Megan Oldham grabbed the Bronze medal.

Speaking after the achivement the Scot said: “It’s an absolute dream come true.”

She added: “This morning I wanted to put that run down and to come out with gold, I’m so excited.

“I really wanted to improve [over the next two runs] but I had a couple of mistakes – but I’m so excited because I’ve missed X Games so much.

“To come here and win is insane.”

The win was a fitting reward for the young British athlete who struggled with a knee and shoulder injury that required surgery.

She first burst onto the scene at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, becoming Team GB’s youngest competitor, aged 17.

With only weeks to go until the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina, Team GB will be hoping for similar success.

UK Sport announced an ambitious target of four to eight medals during the competition.

If achieved, the tally would represent Britain’s best-ever performance at a Winter Games.

The funding body confirmed that approximately 55 British athletes will travel to Italy for the competition, which runs from February 6 to 22.

This goal follows substantial investment of more than £32.5million in Lottery funding distributed across winter sports during the current Olympic cycle.

The upper target of eight medals would significantly surpass Britain’s previous best haul, while even the minimum aim of four would double the Beijing 2022 return.

Muir is among the athletes tipped for a chance, with fellow freestyle skier Zoe Atkin, snowboarder Brookes, curler Bruce Mouat and skeleton racer Matt Weston all possessing a realistic chance of reaching the top of the podium.
