A British Airways jet has nearly crashed into a mysterious object after leaving Heathrow.

The pilot contacted air traffic control after what was described as a shiny silver object, about the “size of four toasters”, flew by the plane.

The bizarre incident happened at 5,800 feet as over 250 passengers were headed from London to New York.

The so-called UFO flew in the opposite direction of the jet.

It came “very close” to the right wing, hovering around 50 feet above it, the report added.

The near-miss took place on June 24 over Guildford, Surrey.

Passengers on the flight safely landed in New York.

The UK Airprox Board has now launched an official probe into the incident.

It reads: “The B777 pilot reports that they were climbing to altitude 6000ft on departure from LHR.

“Passing 5800ft, a shiny silver object passed in the opposite direction, very fast and very close to the right wing of the aircraft at no more than 50ft above aircraft altitude.”

It added: “The LTCC controller reports that [the pilot of the B777] reported that a drone had just flown over their right wing.

“They said it was moving very fast, was probably of silver colour, metallic and reflective.

LATEST AVIATION INCIDENTS:

“After an enquiry as to its size, the [pilot] reported to them that it was about the ‘size of four toasters’.”

It continued: “In the Board’s opinion the reported altitude and/or description of the object were such that they were unable to determine the nature of the unknown object.

“The Board considered that providence had played a major part in the incident and/or a definite risk of collision had existed.”

Just last week it was reported that the RAF had encountered mystery drones during military exercises.

The unidentified object was described as a black circle, similar in size to a car tyre.

In a separate incident, the drone flew so close a pilot instinctively ducked.

Multiple external probes have now been launched to identify the objects.

Experts said the appearance of the UFOs was highly unusual, with no similar sightings in the area.
