Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is “in danger” after an alleged confrontation near his Sandringham home on Wednesday, a royal author has claimed.

The former prince is said to have been walking his dog when he was allegedly threatened near his home. A man was arrested by Norfolk Police on suspicion of a public order offence and possession of an offensive weapon following an incident at around 7.30pm yesterday evening.

A Norfolk Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Wolferton shortly after 7.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 6 May 2026) following a report a man was behaving in an intimidating manner in the village.”

The former Duke of York, who was accompanied by a private protection officer, is said to have been left shaken by the incident. Both were asked to provide statements.

The security scare has led to further questions on Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s protection.

He lost his right to taxpayer-funded protection from the Metropolitan Police in 2019 after he was told to step down from his royal duties by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.

He now relies on private, round-the-clock protection instead.

And royal author Hugo Vickers believes this protection is pivotal to Andrew, who could now be under threat following the alleged incident.

“He needs to be protected,” Mr Vickers told GB News. “As would anyone similar in danger.”

GB News understands the King now makes a lump sum to cover his brother’s expenses, including security protection, though it is up to Andrew how the finances are allocated.

According to the Telegraph, last night’s suspect was said to be wearing a balaclava and was approximately 50 yards from Mr Mountbatten-Windsor when the alleged threat occurred.

Mr Mountbatten-Windsor apparently left the scene of the incident yesterday by car as the man allegedly attempted to run after the departing vehicle.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told The People’s Channel that Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s alleged incident is “of considerable concern” that “presents challenges”.

The former prince currently resides at Marsh Farm after being formally instructed to relinquish the lease on Royal Lodge, the Windsor property he had occupied for years.

He finally left the home in early February and relocated to the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

The five-bedroom cottage he now resides in was renovated especially for his arrival, and sits around 500 metres from the tiny village of Wolferton, and four kilometres from the King’s Sandringham House.

Andrew was stripped of his titles and honours by the King in 2025.

He was later arrested in February, on his 66th birthday, on suspicion of misconduct in public office following allegations he shared sensitive information with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein during his time as the UK’s trade envoy.

He has denied any wrongdoing over his links to Epstein.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment, while Andrew’s representatives have not yet responded to a request for a comment.
