A historic pub in an Essex village is set for a major transformation despite concern from local residents.

Plans have been greenlit for the 17th-century boozer to be changed into a nursery by Uttlesford District Council.

The site has a vast architectural history dating back to the 17th century and is a Grade II listed building.

It was best known as the former Feathers Inn pub on Cambridge Road in Stansted Mountfitchet.

This building is listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, as amended, for its special architectural or historic interest.

The former pub has previously been transformed into two different restaurants since 2014.

It also became an Indian restaurant called Yuva, which then closed after a raid by immigration officers.

Raising concerns about the earmarked nursery site, Stansted Mountfitchet Parish Council has warned of a lack of information regarding staff and child capacities and operating hours.

Rejecting the plan, the council also expressed concern about insufficient parking, highway hazards with increased drop-offs, and increased congestion and traffic.

In the Heritage Statement or Design and Access Statement for the site, it claims the nursery will provide a “high-quality early years childcare facility that responds to an identified local need”.

It reads: “The proposals represent a sustainable and sensitive reuse of a heritage asset that will safeguard its future through active occupation and ongoing investment.

“The development will provide a valuable community facility, creating skilled employment opportunities and increasing the provision of high-quality childcare within the local area.”

The proposal continues: “Collectively, these public benefits, together with the careful heritage-led design approach, demonstrate that the proposals strike an appropriate balance between conserving the significance of the listed building and enabling its continued beneficial use for future generations.

“The proposed external works have been carefully designed to preserve the significance and character of the Grade II listed building and its setting.

“The works are limited in scope and comprise the removal of unsympathetic modern additions, minor repairs and routine maintenance using appropriate materials and traditional detailing where required.”

Figures published by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) show that 295 pubs permanently closed during the first nine months of 2026.

The trade body expects the total number of closures to reach around 360 by the end of December, equivalent to almost one pub disappearing every day.

The BBPA estimates that the closures could result in approximately 5,000 job losses.

England recorded the largest number of closures, with 226 pubs shutting permanently between January and September.

Scotland lost 64 pubs over the same period, while five closed in Wales.
