Gary Oldman starred in his stylish 1993 crime thriller Romeo Is Bleeding, while the 1990 gangster film The Krays, featuring Spandau Ballet’s Kemp brothers, earned him the Evening Standard Award for best director.
Beyond cinema, Mr Medak was a prolific presence on the small screen, directing episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street, Breaking Bad, The Wire, House, Law & Order: SVU and Space: 1999, among many others.
He also helmed genre television including Tales from the Crypt, Carnivàle and Hannibal.
In his personal life, Mr Medak’s childhood was tumultuous, to say the least.
