Two University of Leicester students have accused the BBC of digitally erasing their LGBTQ+ Pride pins from an episode of University Challenge.

In a strongly worded statement, the pair branded the broadcaster’s decision “Orwellian” and “absurd.”

Samuel Carlier, who studies astrophysics, and Emmeline Hague-Wright, a history student, wore pins displaying the progressive Pride flag, the bisexual Pride flag and a rainbow feather during filming earlier this year.

Their episode was originally scheduled to air on BBC Two on August 24, 2026, but was postponed twice before finally being broadcast on September 7,

When the programme hit screens, the students discovered their symbols had been removed in post-production.

Speaking to the Leicester Gazette, Carlier said: “Living in a liberal democracy and having the state broadcaster tell you, ‘We’re editing how you look’, seems very Orwellian.”

The BBC show contestant called the edit “weird” and questioned how the corporation’s impartiality rules were being applied.

Carlier also put to the publication: “If I had worn a rainbow shirt, would they have censored that? If the idea is to keep things impartial, where is that line in the sand?”

After watching the broadcast and noticing the alterations, the student claimed they reached out to the BBC seeking an explanation.

The budding quizzer told the Gazette that the corporation initially promised to ring them back, but after following up, was instead directed to the official complaints website.

Carlier claims to have submitted a formal complaint but says a response clarifying why the pins were edited out hasn’t been received.

Carlier noted that the rainbow flag pin, worn on a black jacket during filming, appeared to “melt into itself” at certain moments during the broadcast due to the editing of the symbol.

The astrophysics student described the experience as disheartening, remarking: “There was maybe like a span of eight years where someone could be uncontroversially out in the open queer. Now that’s gone again.”

Meanwhile, Hague-Wright said they had been aware of transphobic abuse directed at participants in a previous episode of the quiz show and assumed the BBC was getting in touch to offer welfare support.

“I thought they were going to call me to say ‘we have support services if needed,’ and that wasn’t what I got at all,” the student told the Leicester Gazette.

Instead, the BBC informed them that her rainbow feather would be digitally removed and that the episodes would face further delays.

Hague-Wright claimed that the repeated scheduling changes were down to the editing process, something the BBC has denied.

“This entire delay has been because of a feather and two badges on a teammate that were basically impossible [for viewers] to see,” the quizzer claimed.

“It takes a lot of time; making [the edit] look good would be even more expensive and time-consuming. It seems like drastically a lot of effort.”

A BBC spokesperson told GB News: “In line with our editorial guidelines, we advise that no badges, flags, emblems or symbols are worn or visible during filming, along with clothing with obvious branding or slogans.

“If such items are not removed for any reason, then a decision is made between the programme makers and the BBC regarding any edits to the programme.”
