Motorists could also see new chargers installed in new and refurbished covered car parks if consultation feedback supports new building regulations.

More than 190,000 drivers have already made use of the Government’s Electric Car Grant, which offers up to £3,750 off the price of a new EV, and includes brands like Mini, Vauxhall, Volkswagen and more.

This has helped stimulate the new vehicle market, with September seeing a record 99,000 electric cars registered, a huge 36 per cent year-on-year jump.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said: “Slashing red tape and making it cheaper and easier to install cross-pavement chargers or EV gullies for EV owners that don’t have a driveway is a much-needed step in the right direction to make charging fairer and accessible for all.”
