Anthropic was established in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, including Mr Amodei and his sister Daniela Amodei, who serves as president. The company has become one of the foremost generative AI developers through its Claude family of models.

Its rapid ascent has been fuelled by Google parent Alphabet and Amazon, which occupy an unusual position as investors, computing power suppliers and distribution partners, while also competing with Anthropic in the AI race.

The company’s finances reveal the scale of the challenge ahead. Revenue increased twelvefold last year to nearly $4.6billion, yet Anthropic posted operating losses exceeding $8billion, Reuters reported last month.

Its IPO prospectus disclosed a $42billion loss in 2025 and painted a sweeping vision of AI reshaping the global economy more profoundly than industrialisation, electricity or the internet.

A tepid reception for Anthropic’s share sale could weigh on sentiment across the AI sector, whose near-term outlook many investors believe hinges on the listing’s success.
