Drivers are being warned of road closures this afternoon after an overturned refuse truck caused serious damage to the carriageway.

The A27 in West Sussex is closed eastbound between the A284 near Crossbush and the A280 near Clapham on the south coast.

At around 4am, a collision on the A27 resulted in an overturned refuse truck, prompting the road closures.

National Highways has confirmed extensive damage to the central reservation barrier and road surface.

Sussex Police and other emergency services have attended the scene, in addition to service providers from National Highways.

While there are no delays at present, a diversion route has been introduced to account for the road closure.

The collision and overturned refuse truck also prompted a fuel spillage on the road, which has recently been cleared.

In the latest update from National Highways on social media, it stated that crews were assessing the damage at the scene.

It added: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service told GB News: “At 3.50am we responded to a road traffic collision on the A27 eastbound, Crossbush to Clapham.

“Joint Fire Control sent three fire engines and a heavy rescue tender to the scene. Upon arrival, crews found a heavy goods vehicle that had overturned.

“Firefighters released one person from the vehicle using hydraulic rescue equipment.

“South East Coast Ambulance Service and Sussex Police were also in attendance.”

A police spokesperson stated that an overturned HGV was reported shortly before 4am this morning near the village of Angmering.

Unconfirmed images on social media appear to show a large lorry on its side on the A27.

Road users are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol on road signs:

  • At the A27 Crossbush junction (A284), take the second exit at the roundabout and join the A284 southbound
  • Continue until the A259 roundabout with Worthing Road
  • Turn left and join the A259 Worthing Road eastbound
  • Continue on the A259 eastbound until the A280 Roundstone Roundabout
  • At the roundabout, turn left and join the A280 northbound
  • Continue on the A280 northbound and then rejoin the A27 eastbound at the Clapham Interchange
