Fine lines can start to appear as early as your 20s. This is because your body’s natural collagen and elastin production begins to slow, and the marks might only get worse with age.
But there are some ways to slow the signs of this if you want to. Speaking to GB News, a doctor shared the best products to help combat these.
Consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Harley Clinic Group, Dr Riaz Agha, explained introducing retinol can have the most transformative effect on fine lines.
He said: “If fine lines or uneven tone bother you, a retinol product may be worth trying. Start by using it two or three nights a week after cleansing, then moisturise.

GETTY“Increase gradually only if your skin tolerates it. Retinoids can cause dryness and irritation.
“They should be avoided during pregnancy or when planning a pregnancy, and anyone with rosacea or very sensitive skin should seek individual advice before trying one.
“Retinoids can gradually improve some fine lines and uneven tone, but skin care cannot erase deep wrinkles or lift loose skin.”
Dr Agha is not the only person to highlight the anti-ageing benefits of retinol, and it has been well-researched. A randomised, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study found that 0.4% topical retinol significantly reduced fine wrinkles after 24 weeks in older adults.
Researchers also found increased procollagen and glycosaminoglycan production, which could explain the improvement in skin texture and fine lines. A separate 26-week controlled trial also found much greater improvement in fine wrinkling with 0.075% retinol than with a placebo.
If you want to slow visible ageing, prevention is one of the best ways to do this. Many of the signs of ageing are caused by sun damage; protecting against harmful UV rays can slow down the signs of ageing.
This is an important part of your daily skin care regimen, according to the expert. He said: “Sunscreen goes on last. Choose SPF30 or higher with UVA protection, shown by a rating of at least four stars or the UVA symbol in a circle.

Sunscreen and retinol are some of the best anti-ageing skin care products, but a well-rounded skin care regimen also includes a cleanser and moisturiser, according to Dr Agha.
He said: “I’d keep it simple. Start with a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser that suits your skin and sun protection. If you want to address a particular concern, add one new product at a time so you can see how your skin responds.
“In the morning, wash your face gently. If uneven skin tone concerns you, you could try a vitamin C serum after cleansing, but it’s optional. Follow with moisturiser. A cream containing ingredients such as glycerin or ceramides can help with dryness, while a lighter lotion may suit oily skin.”
