Drivers are being warned of days-long closures on the M42 this weekend, with significant roadworks underway.

The M42 will be closed in both directions between junctions 6 and 9 from 9pm on Friday, September 18, until 5am on Monday, September 21.

National Highways explained that repairing the Bickenhill Bridge isn’t a viable option given “deterioration in the condition of the structure”.

As a result of the issues, a decision has been taken to demolish the structure as the “safest, most sustainable long-term solution”.

The bridge will be demolished this weekend using HS2’s pre-planned closure from September 18-21.

Routine testing identified significant structural deterioration of the bridge forming part of the northern M42 junction 6 roundabout.

Initially, one lane of the bridge was closed, with a weight limit restricting vehicles over 7.5 tonnes being introduced later on.

This will be followed by the decision to close the bridge to all traffic, with National Highways now deciding that demolition is the best course of action.

The closure of the M42 will coincide with HS2 works to minimise disruption to drivers and eliminate disruption for drivers.

Bickenhill Bridge will be removed using specialist demolition equipment in a carefully controlled, sequenced process.

Specialist crews will be used to prioritise safety, while officials will monitor the situation and ensure strict safety controls are in place.

National Highways stated that once the bridge is demolished, restrictions across the junction will remain in place.

Anyone travelling to Birmingham Airport, Birmingham International Train Station, or the NEC should allow extra time for their journeys.

Motorists are also advised to follow signed diversion routes set out by the transport organisation, rather than follow sat nav directions.

Despite this, access to the airport, train station and NEC will remain open as normal, although journeys may be slower.

“We’ll continue to monitor traffic closely and work with partners across the area to help keep routes moving,” National Highways said.
